DayBetter in the bedroom
A bedroom is the easiest place to mess up an RGB strip install. Wrong placement and it lights the ceiling instead of the room; wrong brightness and it kills your night vision. Here is a setup that works for queen and king beds.
Run the strip up the headboard, not the wall
If you stick the strip to the wall above the bed, the light shines straight up and you light the ceiling, not the room. The simple fix: run the strip up the back of a headboard or up the back side of a wall-mounted board. The light bounces forward off the wall and washes the room evenly.
For a metal headboard, use the included clips. The 3M adhesive does not hold on powder-coated metal in a warm bedroom past about 6 weeks.
Brightness at night
The DayBetter strip at full brightness is usable as task light. At 20-30% brightness it is the right level for late-evening reading. Below 10% the colors compress noticeably; deep red turns brown and dark blue turns black.
If you want a "sleep" color, set the strip to RGB (255, 80, 0) at 8% brightness. This approximates an incandescent low-color-temperature glow and does not kill night vision when you get up at 2 am.
The morning flash problem
One known annoyance: when the router restarts overnight (some ISPs do this automatically) the strip controller re-connects and briefly flashes white at boot. In a bedroom, that flash is enough to wake a light sleeper.
Two workarounds:
- Plug the strip controller into a smart plug. Set the smart plug to "off" from midnight to 6 am via your home-assistant routine. The controller does not boot at all overnight.
- Or, plug the strip into a regular timer. Same result, no smart-home dependency.
The native "sleep mode" in the DayBetter app dims the strip to zero but does not power-cycle it, so it does not help with the boot flash.
What about the alarm wake-up routine
The DayBetter Smart app has a sunrise alarm in the schedule tab. It ramps brightness from 0 to a chosen level over a chosen duration. The transition is smooth enough to use as a wake-up if the strip sits in your line of sight. The Alexa or Google Home sunrise routine is more reliable across firmware updates.
Which DayBetter kit fits a bedroom
For a queen bed with a 5 ft headboard, the 32 ft DayBetter kit covers the headboard, both sides of the bed and a wrap around the ceiling cove. The 50 ft kit is the right pick for a king bed or a larger room. The 100 ft kit is overkill in a bedroom unless you are wrapping the full ceiling.
